Alexa Smith is a playwright based in the San Francisco Bay Area and New York. She writes about women, power, the construction of identity, and the limits of law, often set against a historical backdrop. Her plays are subversive, darkly humorous, and grounded in rigorous historical inquiry. She is particularly interested in how customs are formed, enforced, and resisted, especially within Black communities. Her work centers stories of Black resilience while challenging dominant narratives and inherited conventions.
Alexa is the author of Birthright and Things Unknown. Her writing has been supported by Callaloo, the Barbara Deming Memorial Fund, and VONA/Voices of Our Nations Arts Foundation.
She is seeking development, workshop, and production opportunities for her plays.
