Alexa Smith is a playwright and writer living in the San Francisco Bay Area and New York. Alexa’s work delves into the construction of identity, the social construction of race, and the fallibility of the law, often through the lens of history. Her aesthetic is subversive and humorous. A committed historian, she works to illuminate the human condition and the development of customs, particularly concerning Black communities. Unifying themes of her work include challenging convention and giving voice to untold stories of Black resilience. Alexa’s work has been supported by Callaloo (at Brown University), the Barbara Deming Memorial Fund, and VONA/Voices of our Nations Arts Foundation.
